What is Strike & Grapple Martial Arts?
Strike & Grapple Martial Arts (SGMA) is a non-profit organisation teaching the principles of Self-Defence.

SGMA is primarily focussed on providing students with simple, efficient techniques, to allow them to successfully defend themselves in a variety of real-world situations, against opponents of varying size and skill.

The syllabus of SGMA is made up of:
- Striking - the syllabus encompasses punches, kicks, blocks, takedowns, and escapes. SGMA uses techniques from Karate, Judo and Kempo as the basis for teaching.
- Grappling - the syllabus encompasses escapes, chokes, joint locks (arms, legs etc). SGMA uses techniques from Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) as the basis for teaching.

New Location, New Mats, New Syllabus
We have recently moved to the Hall at Western Heights Primary School.  It is a lovely new facility, with parking right outside.

We have also bought new mats - so there is plenty of room for students to learn in a safe, comfortable environment.

Our syllabus has been revamped.  We now have a structured introduction to SGMA, which provides students with a solid foundation in striking and grappling.

SGMA take Gold and Silver in BJJ National Competition
The 11th BJJ Open was held on Saturday 5th July at ASB Stadium in Kohimarama.  Kris won the 88.3kg weight division, with Manu coming second in the 94.3kg division.

It was a fantastic day, and we enjoyed great support from many students from the club.

It was especially enjoyable seeing Manu win all his fights via armbars (with an upside-down armbar thrown in for good measure).  From now on Manu shall be known as "Mr Armbar".

Kris's fight were also enjoyable to watch, with wins coming via RNC, armbar and figure 4.

What Makes SGMA so Effective?

There are normally three phases to any physical confrontation:
- Pushing/shoving
- Hitting/kicking
- Rolling around on the ground

Most physical confrontations end up “on the ground”, with usually the larger person gaining an advantage through sheer size/strength. SGMA teaches specific techniques for each of the above three phases, so that the students can effectively defend themselves.

Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) is widely recognised as one of the world’s most effective ground fighting (grappling) arts. SGMA utilises BJJ techniques, teaching students how to safely take down an opponent, and apply joint manipulations and chokes to gain control of the situation.

BJJ is extremely effective against larger, stronger opponents. In UFC (Ultimate Fighting Championships) an 80kg fighter (Royce Gracie) successfully submitted a 180kg fighter using BJJ techniques.
