Your First Lesson
Your first lesson at SGMA is free, and without obligation. We want you to experience a typical class, without any pressure, and then decide if you would like to continue.
A Safe and Fun Environment
At SGMA we are pretty laid back. Our primary aim is to provide a safe and fun environment for kids and adults to learn, and we have found over the years that the best way to achieve this it to create an environment based on trust, respect, and fun.
Low Cost
Our instructors are not paid, they donate their time because they are passionate about Martial Arts, and enjoy sharing their knowledge with others.
At $25/month for Juniors and $40/month for Seniors, SGMA is a low-cost way of learning essential self defense skills.
Safety First
Safety is always our first priority. Our curriculum has been designed to ensure that students have a strong grasp of the basic concepts to minimise the likelihood of any injury.
Tumbling drills are used to teach student how to fall safely, and exercises are done slowly and carefully to ensure that students have a good understanding of the techniques.
We have also invested in quality mats, so that students can train on a soft, comfortable surface.
Experienced Instructors
There are two instructors at SGMA:
- Richard Walker – 3rd Dan (SGMA) Black Belt
- Glen McCracken – 1st Dan (SGMA) Black Belt
You can learn more about the instructors within "about SGMA".
Gi
If you do decide to join SGMA you will need a training Gi. These can be purchased through the club, or sourced second-hand from TradeMe.
Kids Classes (6yo - 11yo)
The primary focus for the Kids Class is to build a strong foundation across all of the SGMA disciplines. The classes are energetic and fun, with the kids learning through repetition.
The specific techniques taught include:
- Basic Punching and Kicking
- Basic Grappling (positions, escapes, holds)
Kids will learn how to avoid and defend themselves against the types of attacks most prevalent within the "school yard" environment. Basic attacks are also taught to enable Kids to effectively disable an opponent, so that they can remove themselves from a dangerous situation.
Colts Classes (12yo - 17yo)
The Colts Class runs at the same time as the Kids Class. The classes expand upon the basic principles, providing students with additional knowledge in defending themselves.
The specific techniques taught include:
- Punching and Kicking
- Takedowns
- Grappling (positions, escapes, holds, chokes)
Colts will learn how to escape from various attacks, as well as providing them with techniques to disable much larger opponents.
Adults Classes (18yo +)
Some Martial Arts will teach students how to perform jumping, spinning, flipping, back-kicks.
While these moves look quite impressive, they are difficult to perform, and are ineffective when trying to defend yourself in the "real world" (although quite effective when employed by "felix" the cat).
If you have been unlucky enough to be involved in a physical confrontation, you will know that most aggression begins by the attacker closing the distance, and then attempting to either strike, or grab.
The worst possible position to end up in involves being pinned to the ground and "pounded".
The Adults Class provides students with the full SGMA syllabus.
The specific techniques taught include:
- Punching and Kicking
- Takedowns
- Grappling (positions, escapes, holds, chokes, armbars)
Adults will learn how to escape from various holds, how to defend themselves against most types of attacks, and how to effectively disable an opponent (irrespective of their size).
